How Do 4-Day-Old Infants Categorize Multisyllabic Utterances?
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Three experiments, using the high-amplitude sucking procedure. tested whether 4-day-old infants discriminate multisyllabic utterances on the basis of number of syllables or number of phonemes. Experiment 1 showed that infants discriminate 2 large sets of phonetically variable utterances composed of 2vs. 3-CY (consonant-vowel) syllables. Experiment 2 was run to assess whether infants discriminated the 2 sets on the basis of duration differences between the 2and 3-CV stimuli. Results indicate that reducing the duration differences does not affect infants' discrimination. Finally, Experiment 3 investigated whether infants discriminate 4vs. 6-phoneme bisyllabic utterances. The results provide no evidence that infants are sensitive to such a change in number of phonemic constituents. AIthough not decisive, these results appear to be congruent with the hypothesis that infants perceptually structure complex speech inputs.

Perception by 2-month-old infants of glide contrasts in multisyllabic utterances.
Several aspects of the 2-month-old's perception of a phonetic contrast between glides in multisyllabic utterances were explored with the high-amplitude sucking paradigm. First, do infants perceive contrasts between glides in the initial (e.g., YADA vs. WADA) and medial positions (e.g., DAYA vs. DAWA)of multisyllabic utterances? Second, are infants more likely to perceive these contrasts between...
متن کاملCategorization of infant-directed speech: development from 4 to 6 months.
To extend a previous finding that 6-month-old infants categorized low-pass filtered infant-directed (ID) utterances, we examined a) 6-month-old infants' categorization of more naturalistic, unfiltered ID utterances and b) the developmental progression of ID-speech categorization. In Experiment 1, 6-month-olds heard seven different unfiltered tokens from one class of ID utterance (approving or c...
متن کاملEmergence of Syllabic Patterns in Babbling
Acquisition of speech sounds during child’s development refers to the gradual mastery of speech sounds within a given language. During the initial stages of the infant’s life, the vocalizations produced are highly varied from the well formed adult speech. The study aims to investigate the appearances of speech patterns during early vocalizations at the pre linguistic period. The participants in...
متن کاملMorae and syllables: rhythmical basis of speech representations in neonates.
Are neonates sensitive to the different rhythmical units that are used in different spoken languages? And do they use these units to represent and discriminate multisyllabic words? In the present study, we used the High-Amplitude Sucking procedure to test whether 3-day-old French infants discriminate lists of Japanese words. The lists of words differed either in the number of syllabic units or ...
متن کاملSix-month-olds' categorization of natural infant-directed utterances.
In this study, the authors demonstrated that 6-month-old infants are able to categorize natural, 650 Hz low-pass filtered infant-directed utterances. In Experiment 1, 24 male and 24 female infants heard 7 different tokens from 1 class of utterance (comforting or approving). Then, some infants heard a novel test stimulus from the familiar class of tokens; others heard a test stimulus from the un...
